Glenferrie lodge was built in 1895 and was a private home up to the mid 1930s, when it changed its use to a boarding house and also housing for the Australian navy from time to time. It continued as a backpacker hostel until 2000 when it was renovated and converted into a 3 star family run hotel.
Anyone that arrives at the lodge can't help but notice the large statue that appears at the front. This statue is of a warrior called Lapu-Lapu who was the king of Mactan, an island in the Visayas, Philippines. In what would later be known as the Battle of Mactan, Magellan and several of his men were killed. The statue was given to the previous owner as a gift.
